How The Split Works
A single sled carries one driver aged 16 or older with a licence or government ID. A double sled carries a driver 16 plus a passenger 5 or older, with a 450 lb maximum capacity per sled. When To Take A Double
If anyone in the group is under 16, a double sled is the only way they ride at all, since passengers can be as young as 5. If two adults both want to drive, book two singles. A common pattern is one adult on a single and the other adult with a child on a double.

Permits, Registration And Where You Can Ride
A rider with a trailered sled does not need a tour. What they need is access, and access in California means a Sno-Park permit. The daily permit is $15 and the season permit is $40, valid from November 1 to May 30, and one permit works at all 18 Sno-Park lots statewide. Near Hope Valley you can buy one at Amador Station in Pioneer or the Desolation Hotel in Hope Valley, or online with a $1.95 surcharge. Where you ride matters as much as the permit. Open areas near Hope Valley include the Hope Valley Sno-Park itself, the Iron Mountain Sno-Park with its 36-mile Silver Bear loop, and much of the valley floor. Meiss Meadow Sno-Park and Carson Pass Sno-Park do not allow snowmobiling at all. On the Nevada side there is no Sno-Park equivalent: the Tahoe Meadows area on the Mount Rose Highway is Forest Service land, and the reporting on where riding is still allowed there does not cleanly match between sources, so check a current Forest Service map before you unload. The Mount Rose Wilderness and Galena Creek drainage are closed to all motorized use.
